The Waseca volleyball team competed in its sub-section match against Sibley East on Thursday and they won in four sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-13.
“Took awhile for us to get going,” Waseca coach Jolene Hauger said. “We prepared for this match and they caught us off guard. They had a lot of blocks on one of our bigger hitters and had very scrappy defense. It took us awhile to score. We made some adjustments with blocking matchups from row, then things started clicking. Rachel Breck and Breanna Conway came up huge in the match. Bre became a hot hitter and Rachel was blocking and moving across the net very well scoring several points on her own. Eliza Harguth our libero was strong on defense and picked up a lot of balls headed her way. Megan Nelson had another big setting night and just continue to hustle for everything,”
Nelson has led the team in assists all year long and continued to do a great job against Sibley East, posting 42 assists and had 15 digs. Rachel Breck contributed 16 kills along with nine blocks and two assists. Conway put up 13 kills and and Eliza Harguth had 23 digs in the teams win.
“We played a very great game,” Breck said. “Sibley East came out playing some good defense but after struggling to score for a few points we found their weak spots and used them to our advantage. Also, Megan Nelson got her 1,000 career assists which is such an awesome accomplishment, especially as a junior and I am so excited for her. She definitely deserves it with all of the hard work she puts in.”
Waseca will face Le Sueur-Henderson at Mankato East on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the sub-section semi-finals. The winner will advance to the sub-section finals which will take place at New Prague high on Thursday night.
“We need to continue to talk and stay high on energy and focus for the next match. We need to make sure to get multiple hitters involved and in the front row stay aggressive. Staying disciplined on the defense will be key,” Hauger said.
