The St. Peter Saints finished higher than they ever have in Section 1A True Team Girls Swimming and Diving meet Friday and Saturday.

Earning four second-place finishes, St. Peter finished second in the eight-team hosted by Simley at Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights.

Team scores showed: 1. Mankato 1453, 2. St. Peter 1241.5, 3. Mankato East 1221, 4. Simley 1151.5, 5. Winona/Winona Cotter 1072, 6. Faribault 718, 7. Austin 555 and 8. Tri-City United 197.

“Saints swimmers and divers fought to the finish to out score Mankato East,” St. Peter head coach Mary Lager said. “After event 7 (100 free), East was in second place with a 75-point lead. We made up a lot of points in the next four events-500 free, 200 free relay, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Going into the final event, we were down by seven points. The A-B-C-and D 400 free relays came through with stunning results allowing the Saints to finish in second place.”

Eight section champions plus four wild cards by points earned entry to the True Team state meet next Saturday.

Section champs are (in section number order): Mankato West, Breck, Delano, Visitation, Sauk Rapids, Sartell, Mesabi East and Grand Rapids.

Wild cards by points are: Hutchinson, Sauk Centre, Monticello and Melrose.

St. Peter’s Morgan Kelly was part of three second places. She took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.87), second in the 200 individual medley (2:18.05) and second in the 200 medley relay with Shelby Graft, Jaiden Landsom and Olivia Denzer in 1:57.99.

Jaiden Landsom also took second in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.59.
