BLOOMING PRAIRIE — In one of the more bizarre scenarios created by the nasty weather this spring, the Medford baseball team completed a 6-4 Gopher Conference victory over Blooming Prairie in a game that started on May 1 and ended on Friday night.

The contest started with the Tigers leading 6-3 with one out in the bottom of the third.

“It was awkward for all of us,” Medford coach Jon Chappuis said. “Another thing that was sort of lost in the mess was that W-E-M and Maple River were celebrating a conference title but Blooming Prairie was still in the hunt and would have finished as co-champions had they won tonight. It was a weird thing.”

Willie VonRuden picked up where Nate Meixner left off more than two weeks ago and pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out eight, walking three and allowing only one unearned run in the third inning.

“Willie was Willie,” Chappuis said. “He pitched well tonight. He had more walks that we would have liked and had a little soreness toward the end of the game so we just told him to go out there and throw strikes.”

Before the rain postponed the game, Meixner had thrown 2 1/3 innings and had allowed four hits and two walks while striking out three.

Willie VonRuden finished 3-for-4 with a double while Cael Kavitz drove in a team-high two runs. The Tigers scored all of their runs in the first inning on May 1.

“This was a big win,” Chappuis said. “[Blooming Prairie coach] Matt Kittelson he has something brewing in Blooming Prairie and to get this victory when they were trying to win the conference title title was huge for us. But congrats to Blooming Prairie for putting themselves in that situation. That’s a really good team.”

Max Romeo ended 3-for-4 to lead the Awesome Blossoms’ eight-hit attack. Brad Staska ripped a double while Seth Peterson tripled.

Peterson pitched all four innings on Friday and did not allow a run while striking out three and walking one.
