Thomas J. Walsh Owatonna—Tom, a longtime resident of Owatonna, chief pilot for Jostens, North Star travel agent, charter pilot and realtor passed from this life on Monday, July 13th at the age of 102. He served in the Navy in WWII where he learned to fly and was the first pilot to be catapulted, testing that technique for carrier take-offs. He went on to teach many service men to fly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha. Tom was the cherished father of T. Daniel Walsh (Owatonna), Mary Pat Szutenbach (Evergreen, CO), and Holly A. Walsh (and son-in-law Adam Pieri-Johnson) (Osceola, WI). He was the proud grandfather of Michele Walsh (Daniel & Becki), Alysia Baumann (Mary Pat & Steve) and Stephen Szutenbach (Mary Pat & Steve). He was the great grandfather of Devin, Dominic and Daniel Walsh (Michele), and Meredith, Simon, Nora, Robin and Heidi Baumann (Alysia & Brian). In his final years, he has been writing his memoir, and it nearly ready to go to press. Tom is fondly remembered by family, longtime friends in Owatonna and new friends in Stillwater. A memorial service is potentially planned for later this summer. Donations in Tom's honor may be made to Hospitality House, 260 E. Main St., Owatonna, MN, 55060 or to Guest House Rehab, 4800 48th St. NE, Rochester, MN 55906.
