Bernice Van Nostrand 1933–2017 Northfield—Bernice B. Van Nostrand, age 84, of Northfield, passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at Three Links Care Center. Bernice was born on June 10, 1933, the daughter of Boyd and Mary (Turner) Bowdish in Shakopee. There she attended high school graduating in 1951. She was employed at a local bank in Shakopee after graduation. Bernice then attended St. Cloud State University where she received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and met her future husband, Manning Van Nostrand. The couple was married in Shakopee in 1957. Manning graduated from Seminary school and the couple lived on the East Coast before returning to Minnesota. Reverend Manning served the United Methodist Church in Owatonna, Golden Valley, and Albert Lea. Bernice was very involved in the church serving on numerous committees. The couple and two of their son's moved to Australia on a ministry exchange, lived in Brisbane and toured Queensland before returning to Minnesota. Reverend Manning continued his ministry serving churches in St. Paul, Stillwater and then Little Prairie United Methodist Church, Castle Rock United Methodist Church and at the Northfield Moravian Church. Manning passed away December 29, 1988. Bernice held several different positions over the years, generally serving others like at the Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps Center. Her work at the Northfield Middle School as a Para Professional was recognized by being awarded Para Professional of the Year. Bernice entered the Three Lakes Care Center in January of 2017. Bernice was relentlessly positive and saw good in everyone. She was well respected and loved by so many. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and reading. While in high school, Bernice was crowned Miss Shakopee and represented her hometown in the St. Paul Aquatennial parade. Bernice did her best to attend all of her son's sporting events, no matter her interest in the game. While the finer points of the game were overlooked, she was kind and cheered proudly for her son's, their team, as well as their opponents. Bernice will be known for her joyful and vibrant spirit. She is survived by three sons Robert of Northfield, David (Susan) of Oklahoma City, Chuck of Bloomington, two grandchildren Jackson and Ryker, a brother Terry (Ann) Bowdish of Solon, OH, and a sister Bonnie Casber of Bloomington. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a grandson Cameron and two brothers Charles and Boyd. Memorial services will be Friday, December 22, 2017, beginning at 11 AM at the Northfield United Methodist Church with the Reverend Rachel McIver Morey officiating.
