Donna Mathre 1935–2020 Northfield—Donna Mathre, 84, died peacefully Friday, February 7, 2020. She was surrounded by family at Reflections on the Three links campus. Donna Marie Kasa was born on the family farm outside Northfield on August 16, 1935 to Austin and Ida (Remme) Kasa. After graduating from Northfield High School in 1953, she attended St. Cloud State and earned an education degree from Mankato State and taught as a young home economics and art teacher at Babbitt, Elk River and St. Anthony high schools. On June 6, 1964, Donna married Sewell Mathre (local architect of SMSQ) in Northfield. They raised their three children Kristen, Karin, and Steven in Northfield while actively engaged in their church and community. Donna was a friendly and social store owner who opened The Yarn Bin in 1971. Later she ran her popular d. Mathre Gift store on downtown Division Street where she counted her customers as friends. They would seek her out for her expert advice, style and kindness. Donna was very generous with her time, visiting people and serving others in many different ways. After retiring, Donna and Sewell moved to Sun City Nevada where they wintered for six years before moving to Maple Grove to be closer to family and grandchildren. They were members of Lord of Life Lutheran church and lived in Maple Grove until Sewell passed away in 2016. Donna moved back to Northfield and enjoyed her last few years connecting with her large extended family. She was happy to be back in the town she grew up in and where she raised her family. Donna loved their cabin on Caribou Lake and their many close friends in Lutsen, MN. They spent much of the summer there before and after retirement. Donna also liked to entertain, golf, downhill ski, and attend her grandchildren's many sporting and musical events. She was generous, athletic, creative, and kind. She was proud of her family and loved them dearly. Donna was a loving and supportive wife and mother and a wonderful role model for her kids and grandchildren. Donna is survived by her children, Karin (Scott) Kispert of Burnsville, Steve (Lisa) Mathre of Northfield, and Kris (Gig) Willson of Maple Grove; grandchildren, Zach and Jake Willson, Alison and Kyle Kispert, Austin Mathre, and Halle and Harrison Dowd; and siblings, Helen Radtke of Hastings, Avis Reed of Northfield, and JoAnne Kucera of Houston, TX. Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Sewell and siblings, Inez Munkton, Austin Kasa Jr., Gene Kasa, Donald Kasa, Gladys Koester, and Helge Kasa. A funeral service for Donna will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 500 West Third St., Northfield. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
