A dedication ceremony to commemorate the newly constructed Veterans Memorial is being held at the Lonsdale Veterans Memorial Park & Plaza, located at 133 North Main Street, at 6 p.m. on Friday (July 31).
The Veterans Memorial Task Force invites all to attend this tribute to veterans and military members.
The ceremony is being hosted by the task force involved in the planning, design and execution of the project, along with community leaders. These include American Legion Commander Daryl Rieck; City Planner Benjamin Baker; American Legion Members Harold Vosejpka, Ben Sticha and John Duban; American Legion Auxiliary Member Evelyn Duban; Parks & Recreation Commission Members Micki Ziskovsky and Laura Carpentier; City of Lonsdale Council Members Kevin Kodada, Joe Daleiden, Cindy Furrer and Scott Pelava; City of Lonsdale Mayor Tim Rud; City Administrator Joel Erickson; and Lonsdale American Legion Post No. 586 and Lonsdale American Legion Auxiliary Unit 586.
“Everyone is welcome to attend the dedication ceremony, featuring distinguished speaker Major General Richard C. Nash of the Minnesota National Guard,” said Baker, who is a task force member. “The Veterans Memorial Task Force would also like to thank the 200-plus individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and governmental entities for donating more than $200,000 over the last two years to make the project possible. Thank you.”
Features at the new memorial include a 6.6 ton granite centerpiece monument, a 500 pound bronze eagle, a 1,000 pound fallen soldier monument, 150 engraved granite pavers recognizing military service members, three lighted flags, seven black plaza benches and two aluminum fence sections, specialized concrete with a military star integrated into the design, Genius Water Conservation Irrigation technology from IrriGreen.
Speakers and performers during the special tribute will be Lonsdale American Legion Post. No. 586 Color Guard & Rifle Squad, Lonsdale American Legion Auxiliary Unit 586 Presentation of Colors, the Tri-City United High School Band Brass Ensemble, Benjamin Baker, chair of the Lonsdale Veterans Memorial Task Force, John Duban, chaplain of the Lonsdale American Legion Post No. 586, Tim Rud, mayor, Daryl Rieck, commander of the Lonsdale American Legion Post No. 586 and Major General Richard C. Nash of the Minnesota National Guard.
Following the ceremony, a free supper of pulled pork sandwiches and chips will be served at the Lonsdale American Legion, 115 2nd Ave. NW.
“The Dedication Ceremony will be a wonderful time to honor, respect and remember our United States military veterans, to thank our current military service members and to celebrate the grand opening of the new Veterans Memorial Park,” Baker said.
Baker added these additional comments for those planning to attend: Bring lawn chairs as seating will be limited; paver forms and a donation box will be available at the park and at the Lonsdale American Legion; and casual dress is requested and military uniforms or attire is optional.
