Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague now has specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) available 24 hours a day to ensure victims of sexual assault have prompt, comprehensive care.
“Victims of sexual assault or abuse need specialized, compassionate physical and emotional care as quickly as possible,” says Kelly Ashley, registered nurse, patient care manager at Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague. “By having this service available around the clock, victims don’t have to travel out of our community to get the assistance they need.”
According to the Department of Justice, sexual assault remains one of the most underreported crimes in the United States. Victims often seek care in hospital emergency departments.
A SANE is a registered nurse who has completed special education and clinical preparation to provide expert health care services and forensic care to a patient who has experienced sexual assault. SANE nurses are skilled in taking patient histories, assessing and treating trauma response and injury, collecting and managing evidence, providing the emotional and social support needed during a post-trauma evaluation and examination, documenting injury, and providing testimony required to move these kinds of cases through the legal system.
