Faribault’s six-point lead over Austin midway through the first half wasn’t an indication of things to come.

The No. 4 Packers had yet to begin their scoring spree.

Leading 18-12 with 8 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the first half, Faribault’s boys basketball team succumbed to Austin’s momentum-crushing 16-1 run to end the half in a 62-44 Big 9 Conference loss on Saturday in Nomeland Gymnasium.

“That’s what they do,” Faribault coach Scott Morrissey said. “They go in spurts and when they start making shots they’re awfully hard to guard. We had a nice first half, especially the beginning of the half. I thought we communicated pretty well and they weren’t making shots. That’s what you need – you need a night where they’re not making shots.”

The Falcons (2-20, 0-14 Big 9) took an 18-12 lead when TJ Hunt banked in a 3-pointer with 8:35 to play. Austin (18-3, 13-0 Big 9) took back control with a 19-18 lead after a driving layup from Ajuda Nywesh, who scored 13 points, with 4:55 left in the half. By halftime Faribault trailed 28-19 and midway through the second half the deficit grew to 57-26.

“I think we learned some things from tonight’s game and I was really happy with our second unit, how they finished the game and kept fighting away,” Morrissey said.

Faribault plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mankato East (9-11, 5-9 Big 9), which beat the Falcons 84-74 in overtime on Feb. 3.
