Varley

Thomas Varley 1943–2020 Northfield—Thomas Varley, age 77, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday evening, December 29, 2020. Thomas Denis Varley was born on April 17th, 1943, at the family farm on RR4, Rice County, to John Denis Varley and Mary Catherine (Heffernan) Varley. Tom attended Immaculate Conception grade school and graduated from Bethlehem Academy High School in 1961. Tom attended St. John's University in Collegeville, MN, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History in 1965. He then completed his Master's Degree in Education from the College of St. Thomas in 1966. Tom married Joan Marie Willer on September 3rd, 1966 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Faribault, MN. After stops in New Jersey, Georgia, St Paul, and Bloomington, they settled in Northfield and raised three sons, Stephen (Stephanie) of Gem Lake, David (Amanda) of Mendota Heights, Daniel (Ashleigh) of Minneapolis. Tom served his country in Vietnam from April 1968 to April 1969 with the Army's 1st Infantry Division. He retired a Major after ten years of service which included active and reserve duty. Tom was awarded two Bronze Stars and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for performance of duties in the war zone. Tom began his career with Control Data Corporation (CDC) serving in various managerial roles throughout several divisions. The majority of his career with CDC was with the Fair Break Program. Fair Break utilized computer based education while students were employed with CDC, allowing work place experience upon graduation. This program eventually was implemented at a national level with a ceremonial signing, including Tom, at the White House. Tom's executive career continued at Minnesota Educational Computer Corporation (MECC) as VP of Marketing. Most would remember MECC for their educational software "The Oregon Trail" or "Number Munchers" for the grade school classroom. Tom finished his career with JDL Technologies as SVP of Strategic Planning. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joan; 3 sons, Stephen (Stephanie) of Gem Lake, David (Amanda) of Mendota Heights, Daniel (Ashleigh) of Minneapolis; 10 grandchildren, Hannah, Conor, Skip, Emma, Maya, Griffin, Ellen, Adele, Owen, Declan; 3 brothers, Dr. James (Perha) of Tallahassee, Florida, Joseph of Faribault, Leo (Molly) of St. Paul; and his sister-in-law, Mary Varley of Faribault. Tom was preceded in death by his parents John Denis Varley and Mary Catherine (Heffernan) Varley, in-laws Roy Willer and Evelyn (Piper) Willer, an infant sister Mary Catherine, brother John Varley, and sister-in-law Denise (Donkers) Varley. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM, Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Interment with Military Honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Northfield.
