John G. Chmelik 1933–2020 Faribault—John G. Chmelik, 87, of Owatonna, a loving husband to Diane (Wencl) Chmelik went to heaven on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at home with his children at his side. John is one of twelve children born to Martha Renchin and Rudolph Chmelik of Owatonna. After graduating high school and working on the family farm, John served 2 years in the US Army. Upon his return, John married Connie Malecha and together they had six children. For 21 years, John and Connie built and managed a successful dairy farm in Dennison, Minnesota. They later divorced in 1981. John met and married Barbara Housman Willems and together they found joy and love with each other and their blended family. John and Barb had the pleasure of traveling the nation in their RV, visiting friends and family along the way. They appreciated the simple comforts in life throughout their 23 years of marriage. After Barbs unexpected death, John met and married Diane Wencl and together they made their home in Owatonna. John continued to enjoy the periodic vacation, reading his westerns, spending time with his growing family and found a new love in his dog Buffy. Together, John and Buffy took numerous walks around the parks and were the best of companions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Martha, older brothers James and Herbert, older sister Ruth, younger sister Marjorie, wife Barbara, step son Paul Willems, daughter Brenda, and great granddaughter Natalie. John is survived by his wife Diane, children Bruce (Laura) Chmelik, Brian Chmelik, Barbara (Matthew) Jennings, William Chmelik, Britney DePauw, Bekki Maki (Joshua Matti), step children Carlton "Butch" (LeaAnn) Willems, Lori (Robert) Cole, Janice (Troy) Higgins, Cheryl (Jeff) Ptacek, and Edward (Melissa) Wencl all of Minnesota. Brothers and sisters Mary Rother, Patty Chmelik, Gaylon (Sue) Amy, Jean Forster, Rudolph (Rita) Chmelik, Betty (Kenny) Gregor, Marvin (JoAnn) Chmelik, Martha Piepho, Audrey (Gene) Gehrke, Bud (Joyce) Housman, Phyllis Pollock, and Kathleen Housman, 28 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Memorial service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Owatonna Minnesota and a luncheon to follow at The VFW in Owatonna. Military honors will be provided by the Steele County Funeral Unit. Memorials can be made to Brighton Hospice and the Owatonna V.F.W.
