As McRaith Funeral Homes and Crematory wishes one of their directors farewell, they welcome a new one.

The Kohl family has owned and operated three funeral homes in south central Minnesota for three generations – Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault, Arnold-McRaith Funeral Home in Janesville and McRaith Funeral Home in Waseca.

Jesse Starkson has worked with the Kohl family in Faribault since 2003, but has since relocated to become the primary director in Waseca.

The family’s relationship with Starkson, they said, is well established. Brothers John and Steve Kohl said Starkson has never been afraid to jump in and be involved where he is needed and tries to give everything he has to be responsive and compassionate to families during what’s typically an emotional time for them.

The families he’s served, they said, have responded to his willingness and attentiveness in a positive way.

Starkson’s interest for mortuary science came when he began working in the funeral business while he was a freshman at Faribault High School. During career week he shadowed John and Steve Kohl at the funeral home in Fairbault and he discovered his calling.

“From that day forward, I have been actively involved in our funeral home operation,” Starkson said. “I continued to work (in Faribault) while attending college to keep myself actively involved in our business, our communities as well as the families we serve.”

Nearing his 10th year working as part of the team, he has been a licensed director for four of them.

“With having the opportunity to experience the ‘big city’ side of funeral service during college (University of Minnesota), I can respectfully say that the small town life is for me,” Starkson said. “I enjoy having the opportunity to be involved with people that know my dedication and commitment level.”

McRaith’s previous director, Dan McRaith, decided to embark on new ventures but before deciding so, the directors say he made a lasting impression on the funeral home – one that Starkson said is an important role for him to follow, but looks forward to making sure the standards McRaith set are achieved.

“Dan was hardworking and was committed to the families he served, which helped us get to where we are today,” Steve Kohl said. “But, he’s moved onto different ventures and we wish him well.”

Starkson said since discovering mortuary science was the career he wanted, he’s never questioned if it’s really what he wants be doing.

This line of work isn’t for everyone, he said, adding that it takes dedication, understanding and a willingness to serve others.

“I have told myself I will do anything and everything possible for each and every family that asks me for help so that their final goodbyes to their loved ones are something they can cherish for the rest of their lives,” Starkson said.
