Michael G. Engel 1946–2019 Kenyon—Mike "Mayor Mike" Engel, 73, passed away at his home in Kenyon, Minnesota on Thursday, July 4, 2019. A devoted community leader, Mike had enthusiastically served his hometown of Kenyon for the previous seven years as mayor, and was in his fourth term at the time of his passing. Born May 23rd, 1946, Mike discovered early on his love of reading, and in high school earned the nickname "Einstein," owing to his devotion to learning. A smart man who never stopped being curious about the world, he was proud to pass his thirst for knowledge on to his children and grandchildren. In 1972, Mike married Annette (née Peterson). His love of travel brought him all around the U.S. and also through several countries in Europe, where he especially loved England. He was a hard worker, working on the oil pipeline in North Dakota, doing machine maintenance here in Minnesota, and spending substantial time at Foldcraft and at Custom Iron. His proudest moment, however, was serving as mayor of Kenyon. Preceded in death by his parents William and Marie (née Fossan), his wife, Annette and his brothers Gene, Jim and Jerry, Mike is survived by his children Chris (Becky), Liz and Katie (Leif), and grandchildren Terrence, Jenna, Gavin, Gunnar and Lyra. A passionate member of the Kenyon community, Mike's lifelong sense of responsibility to society made him an invaluable servant of our town. He will be deeply missed. The family would like to invite all to join in a celebration of Mike's life at the Kenyon VFW 12:00pm on Saturday, July 13th, 2019 for food and fellowship.
