LTC Leif Gunhus, son of Lorry Gunhus and the late Sharon Gunhus, retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of honorable service. A retirement ceremony was held in June of 2012 at Colorado Springs, CO. His brother, Col. Erik Gunhus, conducted the ceremony. His father Lorry was in attendance, along with many friends. Lorry Gunhus plans to remain in Colorado Springs but spend a lot of time in Minnesota as well.

LTC. Gunhus grew up in West Concord. He attended West Concord High School and graduated in 1984. He attended the United States Military Academy Prep School and then went on to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating with a BS in Geography in 1989. He was commissioned in the Field Artillery and attended Officer Basic Course at Ft. Sill, OK, and Ranger School at Ft. Benning, GA.

LTC Gunhus’s decorations and badges include the Bronze Star (3 oak leaves clusters), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 oak leave clusters), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2 oak leave clusters), Army Achievement, National Defense Service Medal, SW Asia Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Saudi Arabia Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait, Kuwait Liberation Medal from Kuwait, NATO Medal, Ranger Tab and Parachutist badge.
