James R. Haugen 1931–2019 Owatonna—James Robert Haugen, 87, of Owatonna, died Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna. He was born December 30, 1931 in Dennison, Minnesota the son of Emil and Viola (Hofdahl) Haugen. He was a Kenyon High School graduate, Class of 1950. He served two years in the Unites States Army and was honorably discharged. Following his military service, he moved to Owatonna and began his career at Jostens. On December 27, 1952, he married Donna Quam in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The couple made their home and raised their family in Owatonna. Following the death of his father in 1965, James began to farm the same land that his Norwegian ancestors pioneered in 1854. He continued to farm up to his death. He grew up in a family that spoke Norwegian and was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He loved working the farm land, spending time with his family and following Owatonna Husky sports. He kept up with current events, followed politics and still enjoyed reminiscing about the olden days. His sense of humor and his outgoing nature allowed him to easily make friends and visit with nearly anyone. He is survived by his wife, Donna Haugen of Owatonna; children, Russell Haugen of Dennison, Larry (Tena) Haugen of Friendswood, TX, Rhonda Haugen of Rochester, Duane (Susan) Haugen of Roseville and Jeffrey Haugen of Kimball; grandchildren, Heidi (Jeff) Hunt, Derek Haugen, Eric Haugen; great-grandchild, Ruby Lynn Hunt and brother, Vernon Haugen of Ford Dodge, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Viola; infant son, Richard Jay Haugen; sister, Sandra Svien and brother, Gerald Haugen. Visitation will be at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10-11am. Funeral services will be held June 29, 2019, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Amanda Floy officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna with military honors by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church or donor's choice.
