OWATONNA—A two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Bridge Street between Fleet Farm and Interstate-35 exit and entrance ramps sent a handful of individuals from the scene in ambulances—although none were seriously injured.

A 2006 Chevrolet SUV driven by Vanessa Hoffman, 37, of Ankeny, Iowa, was traveling west on West Bridge Street, while Owatonna’s Halimo Abdi, 34, was turning left from the southbound I-35 exit ramp to travel east on West Bridge Street in a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, according to Jeff Mundale, a captain in the Owatonna Police Department. Abdi had a green light at the controlled intersection, while Hoffman admitted to looking away, which led to her failure to stop at a red signal light—a witness, who was walking in the area, also observed a red light for West Bridge Street traffic.

Hoffman’s SUV collided into the driver’s side door of Abdi’s vehicle, and the cause of the crash was determined to be driver distraction and failing to obey a traffic control signal, Mundale said. Hoffman was issued a citation for failing to stop for a traffic control device.

Abdi had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Owatonna Fire Department, and her passenger—along with Hoffman and both of her passengers—were transported from the scene by Gold Cross with non-life threatening injuries, he said. Proper restraints were used by all involved, and impairment was not a contributing factor in the collision.
