OWATONNA — Owatonna-based Federated Insurance has been named one of the top workplaces in the state of Minnesota and its CEO and chairman of the board, Jeff Fetters, named the top CEO for large companies in the state.
The honors were bestowed on the company and Fetters this week by the Star Tribune newspaper in its 10th annual Top Workplaces program. Federated was ranked seventh out of 30 companies on the large company list. It is the second consecutive year that Federated has made the list.
To qualify for the Top Workplaces program, a company must have more than 50 employees in Minnesota. More than 2,000 companies were invited to participate. Employees of the companies were asked to answer a survey, expressing their opinions about the company vision, leadership, benefits, satisfaction, and connection, among other items. The rankings were composite scores calculated solely on the basis of employee response.
More than 140,000 employees for public, private and nonprofit organizations in the state were surveyed.
“We are proud to once again be recognized for the tremendous culture and team here at Federated,” said Jeff Fetters, chairman and CEO of Federated in a statement issued by the company. “Being named a Top Workplace is an honor shared among all 2,580 employees. As our organization grows, we are pleased to offer an outstanding employment experience to people in Minnesota and across the country.”
Fetters himself also earned honors in the program, winning the Top Workplaces leadership award for large companies. But in winning the recognition, Fetters was quick to share the credit with others.
“When I think of leadership I don’t think of me,” Fetters said in a Star Tribune interview. “I think of me as one of 11 leaders that we have here on our executive team. [The award] feels frankly a little bit odd to me. I think about the leadership as our executive team, and frankly for that matter a whole lot of others in our organization … I just have a role here like others have roles.”
Fetters assumed the role of chairman of the board of Federated on Dec. 12, 2012, the fifth person to hold the job.
In making the announcement this past week about those being honored with the Top Workplace awards, Star Tribune publisher Michael Klingensmith said, “The companies in the Star Tribune Top Workplaces deserve high praise for creating the very best work environments in the state of Minnesota. My congratulations to each of these exceptional companies.”
