The Human Cannonball will be back at the 2013 Steele County Free Fair. David Smith Sr. has retired from his human cannonball shots but his son, David Smith Jr. will be coming to the Steele County Free Fair this year. David Jr. has followed in his father’s footsteps and performs his human cannonball shots all over the country.
The Human Cannonball will be a free act that will take place twice daily on the Gold Star Midway. Times of the shots will be 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Nominations are still being taken for the 2013 Outstanding Senior Citizen award. Nominations can be made for citizens age 70 by June 1. Those who volunteer in their community on behalf of others should be considered. The male and female Senior Citizens will be honored on Senior Day at the fair, Thursday, August 15 at 5:15 p.m. in Fair Square Park. Local winners will be honored at the Minnesota State Fair on August 29. Nomination forms are available at the fair office and at Senior Place in Owatonna.
Dixieland fans coming to the fair will enjoy seeing the Blue Ox Jazz Babies on the United Prairie Bank Stage in Fair Square Park on Sunday, August 18 at 5:45 p.m. The band does its best to bring Dixieland Jazz from New Orleans all the way up the Mississippi to the Midwest in a way that keeps audiences smiling with a toe-taping good time. The band has appeared at various jazz festivals including the Winona Jazz Festival, the Doc Evans Jazz Festival, the Clear Lake Jazz Festival, and Minnesota State Fair and the Steele County Free fair.
The second annual “Barn Bash” will be held at the Steele County fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29. Proceeds from the event will go toward the new barn fund on the Steele County fairgrounds.
Food stands, supplied by some of your favorite fair vendors, will open at 11 a.m. both days. There will be activities for kids including Vogel’s Pony Rides. There will also be entertainment in Fair Square Park during the day and in the fair beer garden at night.
Friday’s entertainment begins at 1 p.m. with Big Ben and the Brians. Luverne’s Concertina Band will perform at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Big Ben and the Brians play again at 3:30. Darlene and the Boys will perform in Fair Square at 6 p.m. Brat Pack Radio will be featured in the Beer Garden at 9 p.m.
Saturday’s schedule includes a car, truck and tractor show to be staged on the fair midway. Fair Square Park entertainment will include Edward Smithson at 1 p.m. Smithson will give harmonica lessons at 2 p.m. and will present another show at 2:30 p.m. Saturday’s Fair Square entertainment also includes “Satisfaction” at 4 p.m., and the Southern Minnesota Real Big Band at 7 p.m. Saturday night’s beer garden entertainment will feature the Big City Band beginning at 9 p.m.
There will also be a silent auction and a washerboard tourney set up in the beer garden. The drawing for the Barn Bash raffle will take place at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Entertainment at the Steele County Free Fair has been finalized. Grandstand entertainment includes Bull Riding on Tuesday night, Motocross Racing on Wednesday, Hairball on Thursday, the NTPA Tractor Pull on Friday, the Antique Tractor Pull on Saturday morning, Enduro Race Saturday night, and the Demolition Derby on Sunday afternoon.

Cars of the 1950’s will be featured at this year’s Wells Fargo Auto Museum. Anyone wishing to display a car should contact Les Abraham at 451-6455.
