OWATONNA — Beginning on Monday, residents of Owatonna and the surrounding area will have one more banking option on the local level.

Bremer Bank is opening its doors on Monday morning for full business after breaking ground on their new location on West Bridge Street in April. Bank President Dave Marcoux said the staff is ready to get to work in Owatonna.

“We’re excited. We’ve been building relationships in Owatonna over the last year, but we’ve been doing it out of a temporary location,” Marcoux said. “We love the community and we’ve been received very well, but it will certainly be nice to have an actual bank in a beautiful building on the best corner in Owatonna.”

Marcoux said not only is the bank’s location important for customer convenience, but also for visibility. For the past year, representatives for Bremer were operating out of the King Orthodontist building in northeast Owatonna. While at that location, the bank was lending out of the loan production office and building relationships in the community.

Construction began on the new building after a ground breaking ceremony in April. Marcoux said the dry summer allowed construction to stay on schedule.

“We were fortunate to have some very talented local contractors working on the building. The weather cooperated and we had a nice dry summer,” Marcoux said. “The heat for a few weeks slowed things down just a little bit. It was difficult to do some of the welding in the extreme heat, but we’re pretty much right on track with when we wanted to open.”

Some last minute projects may still be going on when the bank opens on Monday, but Marcoux said that won’t affect business.

Bremer Bank is a full-service bank featuring business banking, agricultural banking, mortgage banking and consumer banking services. There are eight full-time employees and two-part time employees.

The bank also has a drive-up ATM and three spaces where customers can do transactions from their car. Those three slots are equipped with video cameras to allow for the teller and the customer to communicate, face-to-face, through the monitor.

Marcoux said Bremer Bank operates in three states — Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. The company was founded by Otto Bremer and the principal owner is the Otto Bremer Foundation, which donates money back into the Bremer Bank communities. Marcoux said the foundation donated $30 million across all of the Bremer Bank communities last year.

Owatonna will also benefit from the foundation. In fact, it already has.

“Otto Bremer established a network of small community banks throughout this area and ultimately formed a bank holding company so that his banks would remain locally focused and part of the communities they are in, rather than being consolidated into a large national organization,” Marcoux said. “The sole purpose of the foundation is to reinvest in the communities where Bremer Bank does business.”

“Here in Owatonna, the Otto Bremer Foundation has already begun making grants into the Owatonna community. We’ve had program officers come out and meet community leaders and leaders of non-profits to really get an understanding of what the community needs are so that as grants are being submitted, the people at the foundation will understand where the dollars will create the most impact.”
