Strengthened by a complete game from sophomore pitcher Morgyn Otte, top-seeded Randolph softball worked past third-seeded West Lutheran on Friday in Randolph during the Section 1AAA playoffs.
The result leaves the Rockets (21-2) needing one victory away from a return trip to the state tournament. That will come Wednesday at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, against the winner of Tuesday’s elimination game between West Lutheran (12-8) and second-seeded Kimball (14-8), both of which will need to beat Randolph twice Wednesday.
Friday, Otte struck out 11 and allowed only three hits and a walk, while the Rockets piled up four runs in the third inning and added another in the fifth to distance themselves from the Crusaders. Sophomore Megan Erickson drove in a pair of runs, while Meredith Taylor, Chloe Kimmes and Lindsey Grant both drove in a run apiece.
Northfield baseball falls at Winona
A couple first-inning runs proved to be enough Saturday in Winona, where Northfield fell 3-1 against the second-seeded Winhawks (12-7) in both team’s opening game of the Section 1AAA playoffs.
Senior Luke Johnson started on the mound for the fifth-seeded Raiders (7-13) and hurled all six innings while striking out eight. That quality start wasn’t enough against Winona senior Sam Nascak, who struck out 15 in 6.2 innings, before junior Spencer Wright secured the final out of the game.
Junior Justin Pascua slapped two of Northfield’s four hits.
Northfield will host sixth-seeded Kasson-Mantorville (5-13) in an elimination game Wednesday afternoon at home.
