With all eyes on Northfield for the true team Section meet Saturday the Gators rose to the top, winning with 2,102 points for a comfortable margin over second-place Mankato West (1,928.5).

Northfield showed off its depth in a big way, with a swimmer taking at least third in every single race to go with a win in the 100-yard freestyle from senior Emily Anderson.

“I was really proud of how the girls performed when they had to,” coach Deb Seitz said.

The win earns Northfield a spot at next week’s true team state championship at the University of Minnesota. There, as at the Section meet, points from all four individual swimmers and each relay team count toward a complete team total.

Northfield excelled in that format Saturday thanks to consistency right from the start, including the 200-yard medley relay of senior Allie Clark, eighth-grader Sophia Nevin, sophomore Grete Baker and freshman Hannah Domish’s second place (1 minute 54.13 seconds).

Senior Claire Walters led Northfield’s efforts in the 200-yard freestyle with a second place 1:57.62 before getting sick immediately after the race. She gutted out the rest of the meet despite the illness, taking second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.34), second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Lundstrom, Anderson and Baker, and third in the 200-yard freestyle with senior Emily Lundstrom, Domish and Anderson (1:43.28).

Lundstrom took third (2:00.14) behind Walters in the 200-yard freestyle, and also took second (55.16) in the 100-yard freestyle behind Anderson (55.15).

“Nice to watch two of our girls touch at almost the same time,” Seitz said.

Northfield’s 200-yard medley relay team of Clark, Nevin, Baker and Domish grabbed second (1:5413), while Baker added a pair of second places in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.30) and 500-yard freestyle (5:31.62).

Nevin in the 100-yard breast (1:09.92) and Anderson in the 50-yard freestyle (25.36) added Northfield’s other second places, and Clark took third (1:04.69) in the 100-yard back.

Other notable times included Nevin in the 100-yard butterfly (4th place, 1:06.95), Baker in the 500-yard freestyle (4th place, 5:43.44), and freshman Bailey Dell in the 100-yard back (1:06.30).

“We just had a ton of girls that did really, really well,” Seitz said.
