Northfield boys lacrosse clinched the outright Big 9 Conference title Thursday afternoon with its 14-5 win at Mankato (7-4, 5-4 Big 9 Conference). With two regular-season conference games remaining, the Raiders (9-1, 8-0) have a three game lead on Rochester Mayo.
Senior Dawson Foster led the way with five goals and an assist, while Nick Orosco and Isak Johnson scored three goals each, and Tyler Cemenski added a goal. Spencer Klotz dished out three assists, in addition to a pair of assists from Johnson and another from Logan Bornick.
Junior Cristoph Tisdale recorded nine saves in the victory.
Northfield has won its eight conference games by an average of eight goals, with the remaining games a Monday home date against Rochester John Marshall and the regular-season finale at home Wednesday against Owatonna.
It's the third conference title in the last four years for the Raiders, who won the Big 9 outright in 2016 and shared the crown with Owatonna in 2017.
Northfield baseball's comeback falls short
The hole was too big for Northfield baseball, which, despite scoring eight runs in the final two innings, fell 10-8 on Thursday afternoon at Rochester John Marshall (9-8, 8-5 Big 9 Conference).
Junior Simon Dickerson whacked a pair of doubles and drove in three runs, while seniors Jim Vitito and Michael Ims both lined doubles. Freshman Joey Malecha started on the mound for the Raiders (7-8, 4-6) and allowed eight runs, three of which were earned, through the first three innings.
Malecha then allowed one earned run through two innings, and junior Nathaniel Lanthier allowed a run in an inning of work. Northfield is scheduled to take on Red Wing on Friday afternoon at home.
Northfield girls golf claims second in best-ball format
In a best-ball format that grabbed the top score from each hole from two golfers paired together, Northfield girls golf claimed second behind Red Wing on Thursday at Red Wing Mississippi National Golf Links. The Raiders gained a team score of 338.
In terms of more traditional scoring, senior Molly Stevens led the way with a 73, freshman Paige Steenblock finished with an 87, freshman Anna Nesseth carded an 88 and senior Sydney Noel ended with a 90.
Randolph softball races past GMLOK
Sophomore Megyn Otte fired a complete game filled with 12 strikeouts, while also driving in a pair of runs at the plate, to help Class A No. 5 Randolph top GMLOK 8-3 on the road in the final game of the regular season.
After the Bulldogs (9-5) gained a 1-0 lead in the second, the Rockets (18-2) tied it up in the top of the fourth before piling up five runs in the top of the fifth to pull away. Makenna Otte also collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Randolph baseball falls at GMLOK
For one reason or another, GMLOK (17-2) has been the kryponite this season for the Rockets (15-2), whose losses have come to the Bulldogs.
On Thursday, Randolph only managed a pair of hits against Drew Copley, who hurled a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts.
