Barbara Nystuen, 93

Barbara Nystuen, age 93, of Northfield, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at Cannon Valley Suites, following a brief illness.

Barbara Carlaw Nystuen was born Jan. 28, 1919, in Northfield, the daughter of Oscar and Ada (Carlaw) Benson. She grew up on the Benson farm just east of Northfield, attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Northfield High School. On March 4, 1942, Barb married Albert Peterson. Albert died in 1943 during his World War II service in Italy.

On April 27, 1946, Barb was united in marriage to Daniel Conrad Nystuen and they made their home in Northfield. Barb worked at the telephone company in Northfield until she and Dan moved to Richfield in 1953. In 1961 they moved back to Northfield with Barb returning to the telephone company. She later worked at St. Olaf College and retired from Northfield Hospital where she was the receptionist.

Barb enjoyed bowling, gardening, crossword puzzles and embroidery. She loved to play cards and go out to Waterford on Saturday afternoons to play with the card group and visit with her friends. Barb was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she belonged to Circle and spent many hours volunteering in the church office. Her favorite times were spent with her family and friends.

Barbara is survived by her son, Jim Nystuen (Viv) of Northfield; niece, Dell Marie Jensen (Marv) of Columbia Heights; nephew, Rollie Green (companion Sherrie Thibodeau) of Northfield; and godson, Dan Prussing of Kansas City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Albert and Dan; and sisters, Marjorie Green, Ellen Swanson and Marion Benson.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield, with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 6 at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
