Bailey

Solveig Ingara Bailey 1918–2019 Northfield—Solveig Ingara Bailey, age 100, of Northfield, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Northfield Hospital-Long Term Care. Solveig was born the daughter of Christian Pederson and Petra Ingara (Berge) on October 29, 1918, in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Her parents soon traveled with their family to Madagascar as missionaries. Solveig left Madagascar at age 16, for Northfield MN, where she attended her senior year of high school, graduating in 1938. Solveig went on to study at St. Olaf College where she received her bachelor's degree in English, and met her future husband. She was united in marriage to Robert Bailey on May 1, 1943, in Parkersburg, Iowa. After Robert completed service in the army and medical school, Solveig and Robert moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, and then to Waterloo, Iowa. She was a homemaker, who raised five children, and was active in church and charity activities. The couple retired to Northfield, Mn in 1996. Both continued to be active in church and community service in retirement. Robert passed away in 2001. Solveig's life of reconciliation was given form in her baking bread, and her welcoming way of breaking bread together. As she sewed thousands of diapers for the children of the world, and carefully and lovingly sewed the Hardanger of her Norwegian heritage, she tied together her family, friends, church circle and PEO sisters into the fabric her life and their own. She resisted partiality and hypocrisy, and so, preserved her compassion beyond political, religious, gender and personality divisions, without surrendering her own idealism. She is survived by her children, Doris Bailey of Northfield; Jane (Richard) Nelson of Northfield; Margaret (Robert) Cox of Hastings; Lois Bailey of Iowa City, IA; John Bailey (Eileen Keller) of Northfield; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Solveig was preceded in death by her husband; and her siblings Ruth Marguerite Evenson; Erling Pederson; Esther Crist; Christine Stime; Harold Pederson; Jennie Marie Swiggum; Adeline Swiggum; and George Pederson. Funeral services will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church on Monday, May 27, 2019, beginning at 10 AM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield. Please consider donations to Bread for the World or Doctors without Borders in lieu of flowers. biermanfuneralhome.com.
