Charlotte Smith 1926–2019 Northfield—Charlotte Smith, age 93 of Northfield, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care. Charlotte was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on April 11, 1926 as the youngest of five children. She graduated from secondary school at Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) in 1944 and received her BA degree in education from Connecticut College (New London, CT) in 1948. Charlotte and her husband, Bardwell, moved to Northfield, MN in 1961, where Bardwell began teaching at Carleton College. Soon after, Charlotte began teaching in the Northfield School System as a Special Education Teacher. Charlotte received her Masters Degree in Education from the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN). She enjoyed a rewarding career helping elementary and middle school students overcome the challenges of special learning needs. Charlotte had so many life experiences that ranged from pilgrimages around the world to being involved in many groups at First United Church of Christ and events at Carleton College. She was a gracious host to friends, foreign exchange students and visiting professors. Whether it was walking through the Carleton Arboretum with one of her beloved dogs on a crisp fall day or arranging freshly picked wildflowers for a dear friend, Charlotte loved nature. Charlotte's family and friends knew her as an exceptionally kind and caring person who always saw the best in people. She carried herself with a simple elegance that always put others before herself. Her caring, kindness, generosity and genuine interest in others will be missed by those who knew her. Charlotte is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bardwell; children, Peter (Candice Bray) Smith, Susan (Dennis) Moeller, Laura Goodwin, Brooks (Jennifer) Smith, and Samuel Smith; grandchildren, Holly (Caleb) Saul, E. Tucker Goodwin, Zoe Goodwin, Max (Bridget) Smith, Madison (Mark Segovia) Smith, Maren Smith, and Elinor Smith; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Rosamond Blizard; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives. She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ruby McCorkindale; and sisters, Ruth Ray and Barbara Curtis; and brother, Donald McCorkindale. Memorial Service will be 3:00 PM Saturday, May 18, 2019 at First United Church of Christ, with a reception following the service. A private family interment will take place at Valley Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Nature Conservancy or the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Research Center.
