Some Northfielders had a beer and learned how to make their own at the Contented Cow on Saturday.

The Milltown Mashers, a group of Northfield home brewers, brewed a few batches of beer at the bar’s patio Saturday and gave tips to local brewing enthusiasts on how to produce homemade porters, stouts and ales.

“This helps us talk to neighbors about how to do it,” said Gabe Meerts, a three-year home brewer from Northfield. “The whole brewing process is pretty relaxed. It’s a nice thing to do outside and relax with friends.”

Meerts whipped up a Northern Brewer’s recipe for rebel rye porter and explained the process to visitors.

Meerts said that sanitation is crucial when the liquid gets back to room temperature; even when a batch goes bad, anything harmful should be killed off by the alcohol.

“Flavor’s the only risk when you’re doing this,” Meerts said.

Randy Clay, who has been brewing for about 12 years, said he and several other Northfield home brewers happened to find each other, and started meeting monthly as the Milltown Mashers.

The group organized the event in honor of the American Homebrewers Association’s Learn to Homebrew Day on Nov. 3, Clay said.

“You can make great beers on the stove top at your house,” Clay said. “I like to find people who are just starting and save them the seven years of headache that I had.”

Clay said the bar’s owner was very supportive of the event.

“It’s just a natural fit to do it here,” Clay said.

Northern Brewer, a Twin Cities-based home brewing company, donated some supplies, including an at-home starter kit, which visitors could enter a raffle to win.
