Longtime Northfield supporter and arts aficionado Sharon Gates-Hull died Thursday in a car accident on Hwy. 52 at the intersection with Goodhue County Road 9.

Gates-Hull, 74, was driving eastbound at the intersection of Hwys. 9 and 52 around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday when the KIA Spectra she was driving was struck broadside by a Mazda van traveling northbound on Hwy. 52, according to the report by the Minnesota State Patrol.

Gates-Hull was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, where she died. The driver of the Mazda, 29-year-old Anna Hauser of Galesville, Wis., was also taken to St. Mary's with non-life threatening injuries. Hauser's passenger, Leara Ivanov, 1, was not injured.

Gates-Hull has long been a fixture in Northfield, active in the League of Women Voters and an organizer of the city's peace movement. She donated her time and energies to the Northfield Historical Society and she also served as an AmeriCorps volunteer coordinator.

If ever you attended a public event in Northfield, you were surely blessed to have seen Gates-Hull dancing.

She is survived by three children and six grand children. Click here for visitation and funeral information.

that's a shame. That area is pretty dangerous when it comes to "freeway crossings" They really need a grade separation crossing and start to funnel other crossings such as county Blvd 1 (east and west), 90th, 100th, and 110th into that crossing!

It's only a matter of time before 52 is upgraded to freeway status and required to be fully grade separated, the sooner the better I say.
