The Northfield Police Department moved into its new building this past weekend and was open for business starting Monday.
The city has worked on constructing a new police station for several months, with the plan that the old Safety Center would become the Fire Department building.
The police department’s new building includes a garage large enough for all the squad cars, several interrogation rooms and desk space for every officer.
Police Chief Monte Nelson said the new building is fantastic, adding, “It’s such a drastic change. Even when we were out moving things in the heat and the humidity, everybody was grinning.”
The department still has much to unpack and organize, along with minor changes such as installing a phone in the new building’s vestibule. However, Nelson said the building is ready for use and the remaining small tasks should be finished soon.
There will be an open house for the new building at a later date.
