The Czech 100 Committee that planned the Czech centennial celebration last October had sufficient funds from that event, to purchase four American Linden trees to be planted in Lonsdale, Montgomery, New Prague, and Veseli this spring.

Mick McGuire, McGuire Landscaping, provided the trees for the planting.

The first Linden tree was planted in Lonsdale Friday, June 7 at Lions Park. The tree serves as a reminder of the Czech heritage celebration last year as well as the heritage that continues in Lonsdale.

Czech 100 Committee member Vi Chromy shared the history of linden trees with those who attended the tree planting. She said linden trees were used as places for community gatherings, even worship before churches were built. After Christianity was spread to the Czech Republic, a linden tree was planted outside every church. It’s now the national tree of the Czech Republic.
