Le Sueur-Henderson senior Lane Schwarz finished first in a field of 83 runners Oct. 9 at the Jordan Invitational at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course.

Schwarz finished the 5K race in 17:19.60, 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Jack Peschel of the Academy of Holy Angels in 17:39.70.

"This was a true 'cross country, race complete with rain, wind and lots of mud!" LS-H coach Jeff Christ said.

"I was very proud of how our kids embraced the conditions and ran very well. Lane looked really strong, one of the best races I have ever seen him run. It bodes well for him as we get ready for the MRC meet next Tuesday.

The Giants placed seventh out of 12 teams: 1. Hutchinson 44, 2. New Prague 87, 3. Jordan 93, 4. Delano 105, 5. Academy of Holy Angels 135, 6. Math and Science Academy 155, 7. LS-H 175, 8. NYA 175, 9. Sibley East 235, 10. Eagle Ridge Academy 315, 11. Cannon Falls 342, 12. Brooklyn Center 362.

Jorge Hernandez placed second for LS-H and 36th overall (19:05.40), followed by teammates Tyler Pengilly in 44th (19:29.70), Xerxes Machtemes in 46th (19:38.70), Trace Edmondson in 48th (19:40.50), Noah Koller in 54th (20:05.30) and Ethan Stieger in 57th (20:37.20).

LS-H girls placed fourth out of 11 teams: 1. New Prague 51, 2. Jordan 79, 3. Delano 844. LS-H 105, 5. Hutchinson 112, 6. NYA 132, 7. Holy Angels 192, 8. Math and Science Academy 200, 9. Cannon Falls 255, 10. Sibley East 286 and 11. Eagle Ridge 299.

Vicky Flores and Arlett Rios finished 8-9 for the Giants in 21:32.40 and 21:52.50. 

Isabelle Schmitz of Hutchinson took first in 20:10.60.

Next in line for LS-H were Cooper Vanden Einde in 12th (22:02.40), Joselyn Machtemes in 31st (23:44.40), Sofie Wilson in 40th (24:09.50), Abby Strom in 45th (24:28.60) and Brandy Wolf in 46th (24:31.80).

"The kids continue to impress me with their tenacity during races," Christ said. "They work extremely hard to stay together and race as a team. I'm excited for the post-season!

The Minnesota River Conference Championships runs at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Baylor Regional Park in Norwood Young America.
