Overall record: 6-10

Gopher Conference record: 2-4

The Panthers will play the Eagles again just seven days from now (Tuesday, Oct. 16) and head coach Onika Peterson was impressed with the defense from her girls even in defeat on Tuesday night.

“Maple River is a tough team and I am proud that our girls battled with them every single set,” said the coach. “The girls played very scrappy defense tonight and our serve receive was a little crisper. Next week we will face them again. We will need to be more aggressive offensively hitting at them and not tipping as much.”

NRHEG 3, United South Central 0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-22) — Thursday, Oct. 4

The Panthers lost an early-season match with the Rebels during the Minnesota State University-Mankato tournament, but were able to slip by in the first and third sets (identical 25-22 victories) and dominate a second set (25-11) in which Peterson said the girls “came alive” in.

“We lost to USC in September during a tournament, so it was great for us to get a win against them tonight,” Peterson said. “We won our first set 25-22, but the girls really came alive in set two. They really sparked as they played very aggressively and that’s when we play our best.”

The night was also set aside to honor breast cancer survivors.

“It was a great night and a great win for a great cause,” said the coach. “It was our ‘Dig Pink’ event at the game and the girls raised money through selling t-shirts, ribbons and took donations. They honored our survivors who are fighting or have fought against breast cancer by giving them a pink flower.”
