The Faribault 16-and-under VFW baseball team got underway Wednesday at historic Tink Larsen Field in Waseca.

Host Waseca erased a 4-0 Faribault lead to come back to win 7-6 in walk-off fashion. Waseca had a few games under its belt and its roster is heavy on varsity contributors.

Faribault also has some spring high school varsity experience, which led the way Wednesday.

A sacrifice fly by Bethlehem Academy varsity starter Aiden Tobin brought in Tim Neirby for a 1-0 Faribault lead in the second inning.

A Jackson Reineke RBI single, a John Cunniff two-RBI double and a Zack Slinger sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the third.

Waseca scored its first five runs with two outs including two to cut it to 4-3 after four.

Faribault scored on an error in the fifth and Waseca countered with a two-run single in the bottom half.

Faribault High School starting varsity catcher Jordan Nawrocki hit a two-out single to nudge Faribault back up in the sixth.

Waseca was retired in order in the sixth, as was Faribault in the top of the seventh.

The leadoff batter was retired in the seventh but Waseca used three straight singles to end the game.

John Palmer, who’s pitched for FHS varsity, struck out 13.

“We’ve got a good mix of athletes, sophomores and freshmen,” said Faribault co-manager Charlie Lechtenberg. “We should be a competitive team. It was too bad we couldn’t hold on to that one last night.”

Faribault is home for a doubleheader with another league foe, Stewartville, 11 a.m. Saturday at Bell Field.
