Defensive miscues resulted in all three runs of Thursday’s Dakota-Rice-Scott League matchup.
The visiting Webster Sox (4-9, 3-8 DRS) salvaged the regular season series with the Faribault Lakers (6-7, 5-7 DRS) with a 2-1 win Wednesday night.
Faribault broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning during a pitcher’s duel between Webster’s John Barten and Faribault’s Porter Sartor.
Starting with two outs, Joey Grote singled and stole second base. He advanced to third and Ryan Archambault walked.
Archambault, who did not have a steal in 2018 or 2019, took off for second on a steal attempt. The throw was cut off and fired back home, but not before Grote slid in.
Faribault was unable to tack on more runs and finished with just three hits and three walks.
Webster scraped together two runs in the top of the seventh. Brooks Prochaska was hit by a pitch with one out. He advanced on a two-out William Chalmers single.
A tough hop on a grounder to second base by Gage Bergmann squirted into the shallow outfield to plate a pair.
Faribault’s Matt Lane led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. He was picked off between first and second base and ended up as the Lakers’ final baserunner.
Sartor stranded a runner on base in the eighth and pitched a complete game with no earned runs, eight strikeouts and four walks.
Jack Meyer pitched the ninth for Webster to get the save.
Barten allowed three hits, one earned run, struck out two and walked three.
Faribault won the two teams’ first meeting 7-4 April 28 in Webster.
The Sox have won four of their last six after an 0-6 start to the season.
The Lakers see the Prior Lake Mudcats (8-5, 8-5 DRS) for the first time 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bell Field. Four of Prior Lake’s losses came to 2018 state tournament teams.
