Met with good conditions Thursday in Alexandria, the Bethlehem Academy trap shooting team posted some high numbers.

The Cardinals finished 13th place out of 27 teams in the varsity division of the Class 4A of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League Trap Shooting Championship.

BA’s five top scores contributed to the 460-point team total. Hibbing was tops at 483.

“I thought it went really good. I really was pleased,” said BA coach Todd Rost. “I thought the kids did an outstanding job. A lot of them probably shot the best they have all season.”

The Cards’ Tiernan Donahue fired a 97 out of 100 to tie for eighth place out of 317 varsity males. Also chipping in for BA was Damon Trump (94, T41st), Brady Strodtman (93, T57th), Bo Dienst (88, T142nd) and Isaac Caron (88, T142nd).

Rounding out the varsity lineup were Nick Tonjum (85, T198th) and Camryn Schulz (79, T280th).

Ashley Rost was the BA girls’ top gun and led the junior varsity with an 87. Carson Heselton was the top JV BA boy at 81.

Donahue, Strodtman and Tonjum all had one perfect round of 25.

Kimball’s Jack Knaus was high gun of the class at 99. His reverse run tiebreaker of 31 gave him first place over St. Charles’ Isaac Peterson whose reverse run was 29.

The top 100 individuals and ties from the five-week MSHSCTL regular season (and not the state meet) are eligible to compete in the Minnesota State High School League state tournament June 21 in Prior Lake.

The MSHSL does not sanction trap shooting as a sport but does hold this event at Minneapolis Gun Club.

Dienst finished tied for 33rd in the state with a 24.1 average and Donahue was tied for 59th at 23.9.

Todd Rost could not confirm if they will attend, but he did have five names who will compete at the USA High School Clay Target League National Championship July 10-14 in Mason, Michigan.

Dienst, Ashley Rost, Olivia Morelan, Chloe Chadderdon and Kate Jasinski will represent BA.

Dienst and Rost participated in 2018.
