A Faribault man and woman allegedly walked out of Wal-Mart Sunday night without paying for the more than $1,500 worth of products in their shopping cart.
Cassandra Jo Swanson, 41, and Jesse Lee Hanson, 33, each face one count of theft, a felony that caries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. They were arrested at Wal-Mart shortly after they left the store, according to a criminal complaint.
Faribault Police officers were called to Wal-Mart just after 9 p.m. Sunday after an employee spotted a man and woman who were known to have shoplifted from the store before, according to a criminal complaint. The employee watched as the man and woman placed numerous items in a shopping cart and then left the store without paying for the items.
Officers confronted the couple outside the store. The man, identified as Hanson, admitted that he didn’t pay for the items and pulled three items from his pockets while talking to police, according to the complaint.
The woman, identified as Swanson, claimed she didn’t know the items in the cart were not paid for. When an officer told her that she was seen placing items in the cart, Swanson said she was going to try items on and then later take the items she was going to buy out of the cart, according to the complaint.
In all, the items were worth $1,581 before taxes.
