Some citizens have recently received letters that appear to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) but are actually a scam, according to the Rice County Sheriff's Office. These letters claim that an audit has been completed and that inconsistencies have been found in previously filed returns.

The letter then directs them to purchase a blank money order for $5,000 and return it to the IRS within 10 days, in an envelope addressed to the Finance Department in Houston, Texas. Do not send any money to them using this envelope.

The Sheriff's Office also reports a number of phone scams from people claiming to be from the IRS asking for credit information or bank information. This too is a scam. Ask them to quit calling and hang up. Don’t become a victim.
