With a late spring, farmers and gardeners alike have been eager to plant this year’s crop. For some, a soil test might be in order to determine soil fertility and assist with planting decisions. The Extension office, located in Faribault, offers soils testing kits and is your primary link to the University of Minnesota Soil Testing Laboratory. Tests are available for homeowners, farmers, florists, nursery workers, and several other groups.

Soil testing kits and information sheets are available at the Extension office and can also be found online at http://soiltest.cfans.umn.edu. The results of a soil test are only as good as the sample—proper collection is extremely important. Each information sheet is complete with instructions on collecting an adequate sample. You can also view a “how to” video at http://z.umn.edu/soilsamplehowto. Please note that there has been a rate change to various tests, as of April 2013.
